Day 6: Nail

Read

Luke 23:26-43

Set the Scene

A nail. The lifelong symbol of sharpness and, in some cases, pain. In Luke 23:38 it says that a “written notice above him, which read: ‘This is the King of the Jews.’ Most likely hung up by a nail, it symbolizes how the soldiers mocked the King of the World. When Jesus was hung by these nails and was mocked, he did not talk back. No, instead he offered forgiveness, saying “‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’” Even through the painstaking death that we all deserve, our perfect and just Savior decided to take it on himself, bear the weight of our sin, and save us all from eternal life away from him.

Reflection Questions

1. How does Jesus' response to His suffering (praying for forgiveness for His persecutors) challenge your understanding of forgiveness and love for others, especially in difficult circumstances?

2. The criminal on the cross recognized Jesus' innocence and asked to be remembered in His kingdom. How does this moment inspire your faith in Jesus' mercy and His promise of eternal life?

3. What role do you think the different people present at the crucifixion (the crowd, the Roman soldiers, the women, and the criminals) represent in our own reactions to suffering or faith? How do these perspectives resonate with you personally?

4. Jesus' sacrificial death holds deep significance for Christians. How does reflecting on this passage shape your relationship with Him and your sense of gratitude for His sacrifice?

Jesus took the nails because He loves us. How can we show love and thankfulness to Him today?
